First, I wanted to thank you so much to each of you for your sweet words and condolences you have sent about my grandfather. I continue to be amazed by you!

Last weekend, we got a beautiful dose of warmer weather and sunshine. I think God knew I needed it before the long week ahead. I never think twice about wearing brights in the middle of winter.

Style Word: Balance out color on color with a neutral color underneath, and make it pop by working in a pattern such as stripes or polka dots:)

I find the contrast of Nicki Minaj and Adele almost comical. Both been given an immense amount of media attention in Hollywood, but one drew herself much disgust and disrespect (don't get me started on her performance!) and the other earned the awe and increased love and admiration of fans. Incredible how what you wear can speak volumes about who you are.

You never have enough time with those you love. Even if they are 97 years old. 197 wouldn't have been enough. But God is the creator of life, and he alone can call us home.

As I type this, I get a sharp pain in my chest, because it hurts to think that this world is without my Pepaw anymore. It hurts to think how my father lost his hero this weekend, as well as the hero to all his brothers and sisters. It hurts to know my children won't get to experience the magical summers he was part of making for all of his grandchildren. But I, along with everyone of his children and grandchildren, will carry his memory with delicacy, and pass it on with pride...

{We celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at the church they were married in San Antonio}

My little family and I heard my grandpa's heart was starting to go, so we headed up to see him. He passed away before we could get to him. I was so close...

As I rushed to the hospital I drove through the small town where my life started, and where he built his. I drove past his favorite restaurant, Jerry's where he would go for birthdays and special Sundays..

I drove past his street where my grandparent's house stands... where many hours of meals were shared, long chats over grandma's iced tea on the front porch, endless summer bbq's with the best brisket you will ever taste, where fireworks would shoot off the back fence, where we gather around him and be serenaded in spanish by his sweet voice and hand made guitar, where we would bust pinatas over birthday celebrations, where he would slice the biggest slivers of watermelon I ever held and passed to all takers with a big grin on his face...I can almost taste it now. I never wanted those summers to end.

I drove past the church of The Aunnunciation where he faithfully attended Mass, in the very front pew, for all the years they lived there. He never missed a Sunday. Where he humbly served his parish and all the parishioners through fish fries and the Holy Name service. To him, God was very real, and the most important thing in his life. Through this church, many of his children and grandchildren were wed and baptized lead by his example. He lived his faith through his actions.

As I pulled up to the hospital, I had that sense of urgency to be with my parents and siblings who had already arrived, and I ran tears streaming down my face through the emergency doors. Was this really happening? Do we really have to say goodbye? It was hard to see so many loved ones with broken hearts, but we stood together surrounding the man we loved so much, and said our goodbyes. I held his hand just as I intended, and told him how thankful I was to him for being open to life and having my dad, the tenth child. I thanked him for the love he gave to each of his 64 grandchildren, and the legacy he left for us to live. I thanked him for being a loving husband to my grandmother for 72 years, and leaving us with the example of what a selfless spouse should be.

When you are with someone who just passed from this earth and into the arms of the Creator, you can't help but want to go with him. My thirst for heaven has never been stronger.

Rest in eternal bliss sweet Pepaw! We can't wait to hear your music again one day!

From My Kitchen: Mediterranean Flatbread

I was at my local grocery story Publix, and they always have these friendly sweet southern ladies cooking up something good for you to sample. I was in there to get peanut butter and bread, and came out with a basketful of ingredients to make this dish.

Its dangerous in there I tell you.

The moment I tasted this I knew I had to make it to share with my husband, and then with all of you, so here is my adapted version:) I will say, this is a recipe for risk takers;)

Ingredients:

1 red pepper

2/3 cup cilantro (coarsely chopped)

1 Ib. pork tenderloin

1/2 cup diced red onions

1/4 cup canola oil

2 Tbls. paprika

1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin

1 Tbls. minced garlic

1 Tbls. Tomato paste

1 Tbls. water

2 naan flat breads (regular or garlic flavor)

1/2 tsp. salt (I always use sea salt for good flavor)

1/2 tsp. pepper

And wait for it....

6-8 oz. Key Lime Yogurt

(I know, sounds completely absurd but I promise it ties everything together magicly.

Now don't make the same mistake I did and get whipped yogurt. argh.)

Steps:

1. Place red peppers, cilantro, onions, oil, paprika, cumin, garlic, tomato paste, and water into food processor or blender, and blend until smooth.

2. Preheat large saute pan on medium-high with a few tbls. of oil. Cut your pork into small pieces.

3. Place the pork in pan, season with salt and pepper, and saute until cooked through.

4. Reduce heat to low and add sauce; cook 1-2 minutes until warmed.

5. While that meat and sauce is warming pre-heat another skillet to warm your naan bread.

6. Cut your flat bread into fours on plates. Tope with meat and sauce mixture.

7. Drizzle yogurt on top of the meat and garnish with cilantro (optional of course).

Its fun to bring in a mediterranean inspired meal and give your tastebuds something new to try. Hope you enjoy!

True Beauty Files: Ignoring the Groundhog

Who cares what the groundhog says?

I am not waiting another 6 weeks to bust out the brights:)

Style Word: I am one that doesn't feel comfortable revealing my entire back to the general public, no matter how beautiful that backless dress may seem. But as I came across this dress that I couldn't resist, I was determined to find an alternative. A way to address a backless dress: Wear a tank or cami in the same hue as the dress, and it will blend a little more naturally. Of course, this won't work for every backless dress, but in this particular case, it did the trick!

Style File: February Weekend

When February rolls around, this is the shop I find myself visiting more than any;)

And since Monday, we will be sharing how we spread the love over at Megan's blog, I am sharing here just a few ways I did so this week...

1. Got my lazy bones out of bed early to make Gabe some coffee and breakfast, and to have some time with him before he went off to work. So glad I did. He is extra cute in a tie.

2. Called a few good friends who I haven't spoken with in too long.

3. Sent a surprise package to a sister.

4. We did Gabe's favorite act of kindness....pay for the people behind us at the toll booth:)

5. The babes and I made some bread for the neighbors. (Little G loooves to help bake.)

DIY: "You are a Gem" Valentines

I like to call my good friends and family "gems" because they are hard to come by, and they are of much value:) I thought this was a fun way to let them know...

Materials:

Cream and Red cardstock (linen is a nice touch)

Super Glue

Flatpost Earring Findings

Rhinestones (8-10 mm)

Mini Envelopes (find some here.)

Ribbon (I used a canvas ribbon)

Letter stamps and pad (optional)

Instructions:

1. Attach rhinestones to flat base earring using super glue or jewelry glue. Let dry for at least a few minutes.

2. Stamp or write your words on the cardstock. "You are a gem." or "Gem of a friend." Cut the phrase out.

3. Cut flag bunting shapes out of your red cardstock.

4. Glue the phrase to the flag shape and insert a pair rhinestone earrings on the ends.

5. Insert into mini envelope packages and tie with ribbon!

*You can purchase sterling silver earring bases and real rhinestones to upgrade the quality and for friends with metal sensitivities!*

Hope this helps with Valentine's Day ideas for you. Who said Valentine's are just for lovers? ;)

A little motivation for me to take care of my skin and do my hair more often than once a week;) I really love all the do it yourself scrubs I have been seeing around the web. They are a natural and healthy way to take care of yourself without spending to much money! Double score.

Also, my friends, I promised myself I wouldn't enter any contests for a while but much to my own dismay I spasticly entered Refinery29's "Next Style Blogger" contest! Biting my nails over this. So, again, I am asking for your vote. Luckily this is really easy to do so. From My Kitchen: Lasagna Soup

A few years ago, some dear family friends had Gabe and I over for dinner, and Lasgna Soup was on the menu. It immediately became a favorite, and I have made it faithfully ever since. It actually doesn't taste like lasagna, but it is mouthwateringly delicious. I usually cook this for friends who have just had a baby because it makes a good amount and is almost even better as leftovers.

This dish is great for every age too...my son usually asks for "more please mama" when I make this:) I have since lost the printed recipe so this is an adapted version. I am more of a see and taste cook. I don't go by specific amounts so forgive me for the loose recipe...

I am basing the amounts off of a larger pot. I grew up with 10 brothers and sisters so I always cook for more:) You can minimize the amount of pasta, broth, and basil as needed.

Ingredients:

1 lb ground sausage

1-2 onions (based on preference)

1-2 Cloves minced garlic

6 cups chicken broth

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

1 can (15 oz) Italian style tomatoes

4 Tbls. fresh basil

1/4-1/2 c. parmesan (fresh grated is a plus)

1 cup fresh mozzarella - grated or cubed

1/2 lb - 1 lb pasta

2 c. fresh chopped spinach (optional)

(I actually completely forgot to add this to this batch as you can see in the picture, but usually do because it is a great way to sneak in those vegetables to the little ones;)

(I used about a pound of Cavatappi. Malfalda is another great one. For some reason, pasta shapes can add so much life to the meal...)

Cooking steps:

Have everything chopped so its ready to add as needed.

-Brown the sausage on the bottom of a stew pot.

-Add in Garlic and Onion and saute till onions are soft.

-Add in the fresh basil and salt and pepper if desired. (Depends on what meat you have.)

-Add the Chicken broth, tomatoes, and tomato sauce, and bring to a boil. (Medium heat should do.)

-Add in your pasta and watch closely.

(Its key to not overcook the noodles. I take it off the burner right before thoroughly cooked as it continues to soak the soup a few minutes after. I learned this after a couple batches of giant over cooked noodles in my soup.)

-Add in parmesan and chopped spinach

-Serve in bowls and top with fresh mozarella and additional fresh basil if desired.

-Enjoy with a glass of wine and Italian Bread.

This is what I call comfort food. Its best in the cold winter months:)

Throwing a little twist into the month of love.....

Last year, two ladies with big hearts made a big effort to promote genuine acts of kindness in the blogosphere. It had really cool results. This year, they have asked me to join in on the mission, and I was pretty excited to take part in such a fine task;) So Megan of Mackey Madness, Michaela of Michaela Noelle Designs, and I are joining forces to continue the love spreading and kindness making....

The DEETS:

Think of a way (or several ways) that you can give a friend, neighbor, spouse, stranger, mother, brother, etc. an act of kindness with no explanation or expectation of praise. This my friends is a little way to pay it forward to the world around us, and continue to encourage what we all could use a little more of. Put up a post about how you spread the love, and NEXT MONDAY, Feb. 6th Megan will be hosting a link up party where we all celebrate and bloghop to see how everyone is paying it forward!

Some ideas to get you going:

-Write a handwritten letter to an old friend or new.

-By flowers for a co-worker.

-Call a family member to tell them you love them just because.

-Pay for the person's starbucks' behind you. (Everyone's dream)

-Pay for the person's car behind you at the toll booth (my husband loves to do this one).

-Start a conversation with that person you never talk to.

-Smile and make eye contact with people you walk by. (Its strangely rare these days)

-Check in your local hospice or elderly home and offer help or visit. (You would be surprised how many of them have no family visiting them!)

- Offer to do your husbands usual chores. (ie, if he always takes out the trash or irons his shirts, do it for him!)

-On the road, let those mergers in. (Cuz we all know it takes every act of the will to do so)

Veronica Rose: 8 & 9 month photos

Snap. And just like that she is a 9 month old, with her first tooth coming through, the biggest and sweetest grin that she reveals by the minute, and a wide sense of curiosity and exploration around the first floor of our home. Little Veronica also discovered the joy of cheerios, climbing up and standing next to her brother, and playing peek-a-boo. She continues to make daddy melt with the simple wave of her sweet chubby hand.

These two are still crazy about each other (with the occasional over squeeze and zealous head pat on Gabriel's part;)), and always want to be where the other is. Watching them interact makes Gabe and I look forward to their lives together.

STYLE WORD: Layering up your scarves can be a fun way to change things up. I used two similar tones and weaved together for an ombre look and feel:)

UP FOR DISCUSSION: The "M" Word

Does the word modest leave you with a positive or negative feel?

To be honest, I am always hesitant to use the word modest because it has seemed to be black labeled in today's society. No one wants to be covered up, right? "If you got it flaunt it" seems to be a more appropriate motto these days. I wish this wasn't the case. I think modesty is a lost virtue, that should be held up and esteemed alongside with your dignity. It doesn't have to mean covered up, rather, to me its a reflection of knowing who you are, what you are worth, and dressing with both style and grace to accurately reflect that. This is what prompted me to start this series. I realize I am one of the few and far between who happens to think the more you reveal, the less likely people can perceive your true beauty. There is something of value when a women carries her confidence and self worth in high esteem, and chooses to wear those as her greatest features, so I hope this series can encourage women to do so!

Let me introduce you to this fantastic new line on the block...

I have known Tina and Erica (two lovely sisters) for a while, and was completely intrigued when I heard they were joining creative forces to start their own line of jewelry, VELINA. Together they carry just about every talent you need to run a successful business. It did not surprise me that when they came out with their first lookbook, that it was compelling and completely breathtaking.

DIY: Message in a Bottle

Will be sharing with a few DIY's in the next few weeks that will hopefully help with your Valentine's Day this year:) This Message in a Bottle doesn't have to be only for the romantics. The fun thing is, whoever you give this too has no idea what's written on the note, so you can make it as easy or as challenging as you want to get to;)

Supplies:

Small Glass Bottle (Found mine at Hobby Lobby for 2$)

Confetti (any kind)

Paper

Coffee

Paint Brush

1) Place the confetti at the bottom of the bottle (because confetti makes everything a tad more fun.)

I am pulling out an old trick I learned in school to instantly age paper...

2) Wet both sides of your paper with coffee (I used a cream cardstock), and place in the sun to dry.

This will curl up the edges. I did a second coat just around the edges for extra effect.

3) Write your note, roll it up, and place in the bottle.

You can always add washi tape around the bottle, do sprinkles instead of confetti, stick a rose in the jar along with the note, etc. Personalize it the way you think your loved one will most enjoy:)

Rachel Bilson Inspired: Rhinestone Trim Shirt

I saw this cover of Rachel Bilson for Nylon Magazine, and thought it was such a fantastic ensemble. She is one of my favorite fashionistas because she pulls everything together so effortlessly without ever revealing too much. This shirt is a really easy DIY that doesn't take much time, and is a great statement piece to add to your wardrobe:)

Since this is not a shirt that will have much life span, don't go and use your nicest white button down.

Your Supplies:

White Button down or polo (mine thrifted for 4$)

Black Ribbon (I used a wider grosgrain ribbon that best fit the trim of my shirt)

Multi-shape Rhinestones (I used two packs from Hobby Lobby for a total of $3.50)

Hem Tape

Glue Gun

Total Cost of the shirt: 8$

Now being a crafter I had the ribbon, hem tape, and glue gun so you can calculate cost accordingly.

Steps:

1.) Pre-measure your ribbon along the front side of your shirt.

(I singed the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.)

2) Place hem tape along the edge (avoid button holes so that the shirt can still button), and iron the ribbon over to secure. If you don't have hem tape, hot glue would work.

3.) Place rhinestones in random order along the ribbon using hot glue until you reach the end of the shirt. If you don't plan on wearing it untucked, only place them till you reach the waistline.

Style your shirt the way you wish and you are done!

There are so many color options you could do for this if you wanted to create a different look. Please not e that this shirt will not endure the washing machine and would need to be hand washed!

Totally easy and fun to wear! Be sure and share your photos on the IHOD FB page if you try this project! I would love to see them!

Take3: The Sunny 16 Rule, Lenses, and Free Photoshop Actions!

I took a few semesters of photography in college, and we went over darkroom, aperture, lenses and lighting, etc. However, since we got our new camera last year, I have yet to sit down and read the manuel on how to work a DSLR. Its a whole new world I need to master.

I am definately a visual learner so this image immediately caught my attention. Its an easy way to translate what f-stop your camera should be on when you are snapping your subject.

Also, I get a lot of questions on what I do to my photos. I use photoshop actions from a range of places. The pioneer Woman's set was the very first I ever started using. They are fantastic! You can download them here for free. Its an instant way to improve your photo. She has many other helpful tips to check out!

I think that is all I will give you for now:) You can check out more photography tips I posted here and here. I have a lot to learn myself. My husband is the one who takes most of the photos here on the blog and I do the photoshop editing. Lucky for me he is more skilled than I am...

My Katniss Everdeen Moment

I have this really cool little brother named Paul. He is my kids favorite Uncle.

When we were in St. Louis, he wanted to practice his archery so we all piled in the car to see what this was all about. He gave me a lesson, and I must say....
I had my Katniss Everdeen moment.

I think if I had one of these in my backyard it would fast become my stress relief outlet.

It was quite exhilarating.

My sisters make everything an adventure. They were climbing trees and causing a scene in the archery fields at Forest Park. It was all very entertaining:) Can't imagine life without them.

Paul was very patient with us. He has such a big heart.

So, speaking of Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games movie comes out in 71 days...just an FYI;) I tore through the trilogy last year. Definately the must read of 2011. However, now I am in need of some new must reads! Let me know any books you have read recently that were fantastic. Not just okay.... but FANTASTIC!

A lookbook for the Modern Modeste

(title coined by the lovely Katie of NOLA, and tagline by the lovely Grace Hester)

I want this series to not just be a lookbook on modest fashion, but a parallel to interior beauty as well....as stated in my favorite Audrey quote below, "the true beauty of a woman is reflected in her soul." So my hope is that as each of you link up, we encourage each other that not only is modest hottest;), but that the way we dress as women can be a fantastic representation of our dignity, value, and self-worth. Goal #1: Write More Handwritten Letters

One of my 12 goals for 2012 is to write more handwritten letters.

I had a great dose of inspiration to get me going.

These are just a few handwritten notes I received over the holidays from cousin Maggie, friend Marisol, and blogger buds Elisse and Brandi. A handwritten note can say so much about a person's character don't you think??

So friends, I want to start connecting my lookbook posts to something close to my heart: modest fashion.

I see so many women today suffer from self-esteem and self-image issues. I know so much of this is caused by the way "beautiful" women are portrayed in fashion and media. Not only does it seem you have to be skinny and perfect, but you have to "flaunt what you've got" to get attention....except its not the kind of attention our hearts are made for.

I am really more of the Audrey era in mindset:)...

I loved Danni's idea of 12 before 2012, but since I missed the opportunity I decided to make 12 simple goals for 2012. Some are more challenging than others, but each important to me. Hoping by making them realistic I can meet these goals by the end of the year:) I love a fresh start and blank page...

Here are some of the trials and triumphs of 2011 that brought both
tears and suffering, joy and peace:

1. Losing Gabe's Oma and my Aunt Amy.

2. Giving birth to my first daughter, Veronica Rose.

3. The Happy 1000's.

4. Welcoming two new nieces to the family, and receiving a new nephew on New Years Eve!

5. Running a successful business, and knowing that it was time to close the doors.

6. Celebrating three years of marriage with my spouse.

7. Moving back to Georgia.

8. Getting to teach first graders a few hours a week.

9. My best friends wedding in NYC.

10. The first time my son said, "I love you mom."

11. Christmas morning with almost my entire family.

Thankful for each one of you that have been a friend along the way! Looking forward to what God will bring in 2012. His plan is the perfect plan. :)

I look at Christmas as the most important day in history.

Love so great that a son was sacrificed and sent to save the meek, lowly, suffering, and sinners alike. His example of humility in being born in a stable just the start of a life lead in service to others and to his Father in Heaven. As I cuddle my own babies this Christmas, I can't help but relate to Mary...

There must have been so much love in that stable that night.

There must have been so much wonder and awe.

There must have been so much hope.

Wrapping as Red as Rudolph's Nose + Link Up!

We actually travel every year for the holidays. Unfortunately, Gabe and I's families live miles and states away:( I dream of being in the same state as a few of my sisters or brothers one day. The last few years when we lived in KS, my sister lived a mile away and our kids played together almost daily. We miss them terribly. Someday we hope we can all live on the same street;) Until then, we will be road tripping it. What about you? Is your family near or far? Do you all gather for the holidays?

The last few years we have gone to Milwaukee for thanksgiving to see Gabe's family, and to St. Louis for Christmas to see mine. We are anxiously counting down the days. You see, at Christmas, its one of the one or two times a year all of us get to be together. (For the newer readers, I have ten brothers and sisters! I am the second oldest!) Those of us who are out of state truck it home with babies, suitcases, wrapped gifts, and months worth of stories to share. My husband actually gets even more excited than I do, if thats possible, to dive into Christmas week with the clan. Its non stop laughs, games, music, and merry making:)

This year, my sister Tricia and her little family will not be able to join us, but they have quite the wonderful excuse....their second baby is due in the next few weeks! We are going to miss them terribly, but we are thankful to them for bringing another ridiculously cute baby into the world (you should see their first babe)! Its hard to be apart from loved ones during Christmas. Are you going to be missing someone near and dear??

{Travel Bag c/o Scout by Bungalow}

This lovely bag was sent over from Bungalow and I have traveled a few times with it already. I use it for both Veronica and I. Sometimes I pack all the diapers, blankets, and baby items in here. (Its water resistant too which I love.) Sometimes I use it for me, because like most girls, I always pack more shoes than I need, and it is nice deep and wide to fit them in their well with room to spare:)

I'm becoming a master thrifter..... okay not really, but thats what one good deal can make you feel like;) I was in and out yesterday in a matter of minutes and managed to score some sweet finds. This tweed coat was a find from last month. I about fell over when I saw the price tag of 6$. Thats right. Head over to your local thrift store and see what goodies you find. (Just try to ignore some of the not so cool and maybe borderline 1880's things you might see there.)

On another note, you all make my day when I get to sit down and read all of your awesome comments. I wish I had more time to respond to everyone. Sometimes it takes me a few days, but I do my best! Its the nature of being a mama I guess. Free minutes are few and far between. SO, thank you for being faithful readers and all of your constant encouragement.

I posted this again on facebook this year, and my friend Marisol had this super fantastic idea. She asked me to create a gift certificate of time to give her loved ones this Christmas, since she has been so busy lately. I realized that this was something we all could use from our loved ones, and could also in turn give to loved ones. I created this certificate to share with you, in hopes that it comes in handy this advent and Christmas, as we attempt to slow down the crazy world around us and make time for those who matter most.

Little Finds: Vol. 2

Here is my second round up of fun finds for the little ones I found on Wayfair. Hope to do more of these in the future! Its nice to hear from other mamas what their top choices are! I learn from you gals!

1. Giraffe Babymat - This is going on the wishlist for our next little one. Soft, plush, and safe for the new babies, as well as a great lounge mat for when they are older!

2. My First Piano - My son is really into musical instruments right now. Drums, xylophone, harmonica, you name it! When I saw this I immediately thought of him and how much he would enjoy this. I love to encourage music and art at the toddler age because its so beneficial for their cognitive development.

3. Chalk Table - I have this dream of having an entire room dedicated to art for the kids. I don't think you can do too much music and art when they are young. Gabriel has been sitting at the table for hours lately painting, coloring, playing with play-dough, etc. He would probably never want to leave this table.

4. Alphabet Nesting Blocks - I can't say enough good things about these stacking blocks. After seeing Gabriel play with them at an early age and learning to stack the blocks as well as practice his ABC's on them, I started giving these as gifts to friends as well. They are easy to stack, easy to story, and are super affordable (on sale for 9$!).

5. Skiphop Bib - Now that Veronica has discovered cheerios, we are on our way to table foods;) After doing way too much laundry last week filled solely with her clothes caked in biscuits and cheerios, I decided it was time to get a few of these bibs. Large, water resistant, and has a catch all food pocket. Score!

6. Wooden Tea Set - I am counting down the days till I can have a tea party with Veronica. I think I might have to get more than one tea set. I love wooden toys and how durable they are, so this tea set I could actually have tea in;) And then of course, we will have to get a Little Play Kitchen to go with!

7. Boon Odd Ducks - Considering Rubber Duckies are a classic bath toy that 99% of American kids own, why not a set of bright bold patterned ones?? These are obviously right up my alley;) Veronica actually uses our rubber ducks as teething toys these days...

My family celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas, where the tradition is to put out your shoes or stockings for him to fill. This comes from the story that St. Nicholas placed gold coins in a poor families' stockings that were hanging to try to help them get out of financial debt and slavery. (You can read the story here.)

Well yesterday, I wanted to create little packages to give to my 1st grade students and children (for their stockings) in honor of his celebration day:) You can easily create a version yourself...

Due to the fact that this was right before we snapped our Christmas Family photos,

the distraction level was high and the outcome ...well....the mediocre mess above. However, we did manage to come away with our Christmas Card photo which was the main goal! Success.

I so look forward to getting the mail at this time of year. The snail mail Christmas cards and photos from family and friends is like taking a shot of Christmas Spirit. I bet you never heard that comparison before, have you?? ;)

DIY: Holiday Tassel Earrings

Remember how I was Holly Golightly for Halloween? I had these fantastic earplugs and it made me want to turn them into earrings. Well then I saw these on the Matchbook blog I was motivated to make a pair and share it here:) You know I like to keep my DIY's simple, so its just 3 steps and 3 supplies!

Supplies:

- Earwire Hooks

- Any 2 Beads (I used these lucite beads)

- 2 in. Upholstery Tassels (bought from Hobby Lobby with several color options)

Steps:

1) Loop beads through top of tassels.

2) Tie a knot to shorten the length.

3) Hook earwires through the tops.

That is it! 3 steps, 3 supplies.

Time: 5 minutes

Cost: $3-$5

Perfect for a holiday party:) I might be wearing them with this top.

We started advent last week, so I pulled out our advent calendar and am trying my hardest to really make the most of this season, and help my little family prepare for the coming of the King!

15 Friends Project

So I have been waiting on a very special package to arrive and when I got home from our Thanksgiving trip, I found the 15 Friends Project at my door. I am so excited to be a part of this amazing group of bloggers who are collaborating on an ongoing piece of artwork that will ultimately be two separate completed canvases. This project was the brilliant idea of Steve and Michelle of Twig Creative.

When I received this the first thought was the fabric addition looked like a brick wall waiting for a garden to bloom from it:) So I decided to add a paper cut flower garden I had, and change the colors.

Tracing the outline of the space.

Adding a touch of 2011;) Glitter of course.

I dabbed the glitter glue on top as well as the paint colors to hold the paper cut down.

Keeping to the warm colors I added yellows, oranges, and reds over the greens and blues using paint and sharpies. Definately a few mixed mediums!

Of course, my addition took a totally different direction than originally intended! I had to rock it out during naptimes so didn't have much room for error. I originally hoped to mute the colors more, so it wasn't so Lisa Frank, but since I accidentally destroyed the first paper cut, I had to just go with it on the second attempt and work with it already on canvas! However, I realized that its no secret I am a girl who loves bold and bright colors so its definately a reflection of me;) I packaged it up and shipped it off today to Naomi over at Love, Taza! Cannot wait to see the finished piece! Follow along both line ups!

Please welcome my friend Erica Taylor of Tinsel & Twine as she shares with us the most exquisite fall brunch scene. The styling and photography is so fresh and captivating, don't you think??

For this photoshoot, we planned to create two vignettes that reflected the warm tones of Fall, but without using the traditional combination of burnt reds, oranges, and browns. Instead, we picked a more modern palette of charcoal and cream accented with glints of gold.

Our first set-up is a very sweet breakfast in bed. Imagine waking up on a gloriously lazy Sunday morning. And although the weather is beginning to turn chilly, the sun is shining and you've got your love to keep you warm. That, and a sweet surprise from your Honey: pumpkin spiced donuts, fresh flowers, and a little love note! What could be cozier?

The second scene is a table set for a spiced cider and donut brunch with your closest friends. Circular design elements are carried through a collection of dotted vases, speckled menus, a dramatic gilded hanging wreath of hand-crafted paper petals, a cylindrical cakestand, and -- of course -- carefully architected pyramids of donuts and pastry puffs. So many details to take in make this a truly delicious feast for friends!

I got to sneak away for a morning with my sister-in-law to meet up with Moni. I have to share with you my favorite shop we visited: Monograham. I seriously didn't want to leave. So many of my favorite paper artists products were featured...

Last year at Thanksgiving I remember how much I wanted to make this year a more grateful year. One that I was going to thank God for something every day. It is so easy sometimes to fall into the habit of looking for how what we are missing in our lives versus how much we have already been given. I can't say I remembered to do this every day but it has certainly helped me to develop a more grateful and happy heart.

I am especially thankful for ....

...a husband who is so involved in his children's lives. He never is short on love for us, and he makes our little world such a better place:)

...a big blue eyed boy with an imagination bigger than I will ever have, and who makes each day an adventure for me. He brings me more laughter than I deserve.

...for this soft and squishy sweetheart whose smiles seem to make our world go round.

They make me cherish the days of my life.

So grateful to God for them.

Veronica Rose: 7 months.

Veronica Rose - 7 months

This month she started army crawling. I know have a scrumptious big eyed belle at my feet wherever I go. She loves to rock on all fours, play peek-a-boo, and chew on mommy's necklaces.

There is nothing sweeter than the first few minutes she wakes up and is all smiles.

Trying to cherish these moments and write down my favorite memories.

Little Gabriel wants to take "pookie" everywhere with him, and she is the first person he asks or when he wakes up. Which is followed by lots of smothering hugs and kisses. It makes up for his mischevious moments throughout the day;)

We are in Milwaukee enjoying my husband's family all week long! We drove all the way here from the ATL. Do you have any travel plans? Will you drive or brave the airports???

Sunday Mornings

Sunday mornings are cherished to me.

After going to Mass, we always have brunch together. Gabe loves to make breakfast for us or we go get donuts at our favorite local joint. Its followed by a good cup of joe and the Sunday paper. Christmas music will now be added into the mix;) I like to refer to these mornings as my re-fuel mornings. Its all around a great recipe for the soul.

I missed our Sunday morning routine terribly yesterday, as we were all out with the flu. Already looking forward to the weekend...

Old-Young Hollywood Party - Halloween 2011

So we finally made the decision to be these two lovas...

Holly Golightly and Paul 'Fred' Varjack -Breakfast At Tiffany's

My normally goofball husband had to wear a serious costume and play a serious role this year. I thanked him for playing along so well. He found the perfect Paul Varjack tweed blazer at Goodwill the morning of the party. He likes it so much he wore it the next day as well;) I had so much fun dressing up as my all time favorite Old Hollywood leading lady (Audrey). And just for the record, the cigs are for costume;)

Out of respect for our lovely guests, I won't post their photos here, except for Katie,

A dear friend who came to visit for the weekend....

They are newlyweds who dressed up as Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn - Project Runway. (He looked just like him with powdered white hair and all!) Although the Married sign wouldn't really apply to Tim and Hiedi;)

Being a procrastinator, I finally made the infamous Breakfast at Tiffany's mask and earplugs the morning of the party. Luckily, Hobby Lobby + my craft room had everything I needed to make it!

Smores on a stick, muddy buddy chex mix, and cream puffs were dessert appetizers of choice. Recognize the glammed up pumpkin? ;)

You might also recognize the glitter candles in this table setting:)

Again, most of my party decor found at Hobby Lobby. The local thrift store had the tall clear canister, lantern, and mason jars!

We had all kinds of celebrities come to the party;)

It was such a fun time with friends, which is why its fun to throw a party once in a while. It brings everyone together! Happy Halloween!!

DIY: Glitter up your Candles!

As you know, I like to glitz-ify things. Such as the pumpkin;) I am getting things together for our Old-Young Hollywood Halloween Party this weekend. Everything is Black and Gold, so I made these for part of the Table Decor...

Supplies:

Round candles (I got mine in Vanilla scented four pack for 2$ at Hobby Lobby)

Glitter Glue

Paint Brush

Steps:

Its as easy as it looks!

Apply 3-4 coats of glitter glue around the surface of the candle. Letting each layer dry before applying a new one. It helps to blot the glitter glue around vs stroking it.

(Supplies and one coat of glitter glue)

(Two coats of glitter glue)

(3 coats of glitter glue)

I am sure you can apply this to any size candle, and any color glitter glue!

I knew I could use these throughout the Holiday Season so it was worth the ten minutes it took! :)

I gave my new boots a break, and actually wore heels to church this week. Yep, its a rarity. Cobalt is my favorite shade of blue. Maybe because its bright and bold;)
